The National Czech & Slovak Museum and Library (NCSML) is located in the Midwestern city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Its history goes back to 1974, when a group of second and third generation Czech immigrants decided to protect their cultural heritage by establishing the Czech Fine Arts Foundation. Read More »

A number of U. S. cities boast community foundations, non-profit organizations that collect funds and distribute them in ways that benefit the community. For example, the Seattle Foundation in my home city of Seattle, Washington, was founded in 1946 by a single philanthropist, Dr. Richard E. Fuller, who established the original endowment as well as a mechanism for receiving the contributions of others. (Previously in 1933, in the midst of the Depression, Dr. Fuller and his mother had established the Seattle Art Museum!) Read More »

Friends of Slovakia (FOS) was founded in 2001 by a group of distinguished Americans who had personal ties to Slovakia and who wished to further the cause of better and more visible Slovak-American relations. Their action was encouraged by the Slovak ambassador to the United States at the time, Martin Bútora; the founding chairman was Theodore Russell, the first American ambassador to independent Slovakia who served in Bratislava during the years 1993-1996.
