Sokol (Falcon) is the celebrated Czechoslovak national gymnastic and cultural organization. It was founded in 1862 in Prague at a time when Czechs were struggling to reinvigorate their language and culture after a long period of Germanization, and it quickly spread to other Slavic lands and also to the United States. It came to Slovakia with a delay because the Hungarian authorities prohibited it for many years. Read More »

Seattle Foundation–Komunitná Nadácia Bratislava

A number of U. S. cities boast community foundations, non-profit organizations that collect funds and distribute them in ways that benefit the community. For example, the Seattle Foundation in my home city of Seattle, Washington, was founded in 1946 by a single philanthropist, Dr. Richard E. Fuller, who established the original endowment as well as a mechanism for receiving the contributions of others. Friends of Slovakia

Friends of Slovakia (FOS) was founded in 2001 by a group of distinguished Americans who had personal ties to Slovakia and who wished to further the cause of better and more visible Slovak-American relations. Their action was encouraged by the Slovak ambassador to the United States at the time, Martin Bútora; the founding chairman was Theodore Russell, the first American ambassador to independent Slovakia who served in Bratislava during the years 1993-1996.  Read More »

Cantus Bratislava

Slovakia has a rich musical tradition. The repertory of folk music is vast and still very much alive. The Slovak Opera in Bratislava draws big audiences from nearby Vienna even though Vienna is home to some of the finest opera in Europe. The same is true for the Slovak National Philharmonic. The Bratislava Music Festival has brought great classical music to the city for almost fifty years; and these days, pop music with an international sound is increasingly heard throughout the country.
