Sokol (Falcon) is the celebrated Czechoslovak national gymnastic and cultural organization. It was founded in 1862 in Prague at a time when Czechs were struggling to reinvigorate their language and culture after a long period of Germanization, and it quickly spread to other Slavic lands and also to the United States. On the main square of Liptovský Mikuláš, occupying two adjacent old noble houses or kúria, is the outstanding Museum of Janko Kráľ. Established in 1955, the museum portrays the history of Mikuláš with special emphasis on the literary arts. Read More »

Slovakia has a rich musical tradition. The repertory of folk music is vast and still very much alive. The Slovak Opera in Bratislava draws big audiences from nearby Vienna even though Vienna is home to some of the finest opera in Europe. The same is true for the Slovak National Philharmonic. The Bratislava Music Festival has brought great classical music to the city for almost fifty years; and these days, pop music with an international sound is increasingly heard throughout the country.
